It’s Time To Own Your Story
I’ve struggled for years with disclosing personal details. I know, I’ve shared A LOT on social media already compared to many people. But when sharing comes easily, you can say a lot without disclosing everything.
I’ve noticed that EVERY SINGLE TIME I share part of my story, it generates more response and connection with people than any of my inspirational thoughts or philosophical discourses.
Your story has power. It is the thing about you that can get people to see you as a person rather than a visual obstacle. But not everyone wants to share their story. Your story is not only the most powerful, but also the most vulnerable part of who you are. When your story is rejected, mocked, or disrespected, it cuts deep.
It’s easy to hide from the light to avoid criticism. It’s easy to get stuck in a habit of hiding that turns into years of pretending to be someone you aren’t.
Brene Brown said something that I’m pondering, and I want to share it with you.
Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.

It’s exhausting to hide. I know. I’ve compartmentalized so many aspects of who I am in order to not rock the boat. Maybe you have too.
As we enter the New Year, and God willing it’s a better year, you and I have the opportunity to start fresh. To use this New Year as a marker of change. As a definite starting point.
To own our stories, without hiding it all from the light. Maybe not disclosing everything all at once. But choosing to show the you and the me we’ve been all this time but were afraid to show.
What’s one thing you can do this new year to own your story?
